Different ways to sort your DVD collection

An essential part of owning a DVD collection is knowing how to store them in an organized fashion, using either a rack or a set of shelves. These four steps will help you with your media storage.

1: Storage

DVDs in a pile on the floor will randomize themselves fairly quickly, so you’ll need somewhere to put them. Get a good rack or set of shelves, large enough to hold your collection. Some people keep them in cabinets, and some people keep them on shelves, but it is a good idea to buy a specialized DVD storage rack, especially if you have a lot of DVDs.

2: Sorting System

Pick a sorting system. You can sort by name (alphabetically), genre, actors, or even date of release. Keep in mind that you can have sub-categories- for example, sorted first by genre, then alphabetically within each genre. The recent advent of Blu-Ray DVDs creates another organization option.

Keep in mind that this is your DVD collection: the final setup should make sense to you while not confusing guests.

3: DVD Maintenance

Before you start placing your DVDs on the shelf or rack, each one should be cleaned and the case cleaned and/or repaired. Doing this now will ensure you check each and every DVD, without missing any.

4: Storage location

Once your DVDs are organized in a logical fashion, you will have to find a place to store them. This spot should be located close to your entertainment center, yet inconspicuous.
